Chancellor Seeks Ways to Retore Public Trust After Prescott

Chancellor Gordon Brown is reportedly trying to find ways to restore public trust in the government following the controversial issues that arose from John Prescott's association with a super casino bidder.

Prescott has been the subject of scrutiny for breaking ministerial rules by accepting hospitality and gifts that have placed him in a situation that entails a conflict of interest. Prescott was under Parliamentary investigation following the revelation that he stayed at the Colorado ranch of casino bidder Philip Anschutz and likewise accepted undeclared gifts.

The chancellor is now supporting the calls of sleaze watchdog Sir Philip Mawer for an overhaul of the ministerial code of conduct.

Brown recently met Sir Alistair Graham, chairman of the committee on standards in public life. Sources say that he would like to explore ways that would bring about "restoring trust between senior politicians and the electorate".

Prescott has been reprimanded for his misdeed by Mawer, and the watchdog has called for Blair to conduct an independent investigation on his deputy.

Prime Minister Tony Blair however denied them an investigation a second time, saying that he has not seen any evidence that Prescott has done anything wrong.
